The Hercynian Forest was the legendary huge Northern European primordial forest that in ancient times stretched from the Ardennes all the way to the Carpathians, the Białowieża forest and beyond, and from the Baltic Sea in the North to the Danube in the South. It took 9 days to cross it from North to South, and 60 days to cross it from West to East. It was populated by aurochs, bisons and other  now-disappeared animals and birds, living among the gigantic oaks.
